What a mess. After a great deal of debate, I have decided to give this movie an opinion, rather than a straight up review. I didn’t want to see this movie, but my husband thought it looked kind of good, so we stayed. Please note that this was the ONLY movie this year that I didn’t want to see. I’m so very sorry that I did. It’s a very unfortunate mish-mash of movie ‘nods’ and homages that make up this movie. The plot is simple: a guy gets tortured and beaten because his bother got involved with a criminal who killed a mobster’s daughter and had to go on the run. Both brothers are hapless and unwitting and they get themselves into a good deal of trouble. Unfortunately, there are more than a few sour notes in this movie that made it completely impossible for me to enjoy it.
The worst part about this movie for me was the Q&A at the end. I would have imagined that the writer/director of a movie like this would have been cold, calculating and certain of himself, but, no. JL Vara is more than self-deprecating, he’s downright low on self-esteem. Continually saying, ‘yeah, that didn’t work’ he told the audience that he thought the stuff he put in the movie was funny and would work really well, and then found out later that it didn’t.
I wanted to stick my hand up and ask why he felt that a 16 year old girl who gets her neck broken while being raped by her kidnapper was funny, but I didn’t think it would be appropriate.

I hear ya on this one. It was the only film I put as a ‘non-review’ where it turned me off so much I didn’t have anything good to say. I’m shocked that so few people even mention the disturbing content that it contains.
