The peeps over at SlashFilm got word today via Variety that Gore Verbinsky won’t be coming back for the next Pirates movie, apparently he’s on his way to direct BioShock. This is a good thing. Trust.
First of all, if you haven’t played BioShock, but you like first person shooters, you should. You can get a used copy for about $25 CAD these days. (If you don’t know what a first person shooter is, you don’t like them. Go back to Final Fantasy.)
It’s a brilliant world and an excellent concept. I’ll admit it took me a while to get used to the game, since there are no cut scenes (an animated sequence within a game that requires no gameplay, often very pretty) and there are no other characters, but it’s just such a great world to play in that I didn’t care after a while. Considering they’re reporting that the guy who wrote Gladiator and The Aviator (both Oscar nominated movies), John Logan, is doing this one it looks like it’ll get some good treatment. Also, it’s just be made of awesome. Even looking at just the art and visuals you’ll have to agree. The only other person I would like to see do this would be Guillermo Del Toro, who has actually rung in on the project.
Bottom line here: I’m glad to hear that Verbinski got tired of making Pirates movies. We sure got tired of watching them.

Can’t wait for this – Bioshock is one of the best games I’ve ever played – and much of my youth was spent playing games!
Though I am kind of sad to see him leaves Pirates – I loved each installment. It’s the nearest thing we’ve gotten to coherent mythology in movies since Star Wars. Anyone who bring up Harry Potter is missing the point entirely.
In addition, I hear Verbinski’s tapping up a Pirates alum to play Sander Cohen – who features in the game’s finest sequence. Screw Orloondo Bland…
Geoffrey Rush, anyone?
Hmm… I hadn’t herd that one, but I’m okay with that. The casts for Pirates were always excellent (even Orly, who did his job looking pretty), but it would be nice to see some new blood.
I liked all but the last Pirates. I saw it THREE times in the theatre (once in LA and that was a spectacular experience) trying to like it and i just couldn’t. But 1 and 2 were amazing. Hard to believe that they came from a Disney property.
