I was going to post about this yesterday when I was taken over by the migraine from hell and it was all I could do just to get through the work day, but since today is not yesterday and my headache is much better, I have for you two of the craziest movies I’ve ever seen.
Black Cat, White Cat is a Serbian film about gypsies. The plot is about as complex as watching a Guy Ritchie movie, so I’ll just boil it down a lot. The main character (if there could be said to be one) is a young man named Matko who lives with his father, a man who has no sense about money and is always trying to swindle someone. During a botched robbery of a train (they were actually attempting to STEAL the TRAIN) filled with gasoline, Matko’s father finds himself in a wold of trouble with very bad, but hilarious, men. The only was to remedy this is to have Matko marry one of their sisters, a little person (who is said to be three metres and a Gillette razor tall… seriously) with a temper. Matko doesn’t want to marry her, nor she him. Instead he wants to Ida, a beautiful girl who lives with her grandmother and dances to 80s videos. Hilarity ensues.
The movie is quite nuts, actually. Everyone in it is a characture and everyone does the wrong thing, with the exception of our two central lovers. I would never have watched this movie unless it was recommended to me by a friend, but I can honestly say that knowing that it is Melissa’s favorite movie was occasionally the only thing that kept me going, since this is not the sort of movie I normally watch. By the end, I can definitely say that I did have a good time and I would watch this again. It’s very cute, it’s very pastoral it’s very insane. My favorite part is the shots of the pig eating the car. By the end he’s made a remarkable amount of progress. Check it out for sure… even if it’s not your cup of tea. I think you’ll like it.
Wild Zero has even less connection to the real world than Black Cat, White Cat and I could not have picked a better – and more surreal – pairing than to watch these two movies together. Wild Zero is the story of Ace, again a characture of a hipster, who finds himself in the middle of something strange. He is a huge fan of the band Guitar Wolf (who, incidentally, is a real band, who bank rolled the movie and have legally changed their names to Guitar Wolf, Bass Wolf and Drum Wolf and have microphones that spray fire out the back when they sing. Right? Right.). He has been following them on tour, but one day when he’s on his way to a gig of theirs he stops for gas and discovers that aliens have come to Earth and turned most people into zombies. Yes. That’s right. Aliens. Between the aliens, the crazy guy with the ridiculously tight tie up at the side pants and the girl who’s really a boy it’s quite the romp. With zombies. This one I can’t recommend because it’s pretty personal to your taste. If you think you’d like it, check it out, but definitely watch it as a double bill with Black Cat, White Cat and then try to tell people about them. You’ll see. It’s impossible. Like trying to sing the A&W song immediately followed by the Pink Panther song. It just can’t be done.
