What Did You See This Weekend?

April 20, 2009

in what did you see?

I saw Rashomon and Seven Samurai, as well as Never Been Kissed (plus 50 Fist Dates and Charlie Angels… it was Drew Barrymore weekend on Diva. I got sucked in, what can I say?). And I managed to write about most of those!

How about you? Did you see anything in the theatre? At home? Ole? New? Tell me…

I ended up getting through a ridiculous amount of films this weekend, not all sucesses though (DVD getting jammed, turning stuff off, etc) but I was thrilled to see for the first time the 1931 Dracula which was awesome.

Also caught up with American Psycho and Wolf Creek both were pretty fantastic but not really an ‘enjoy’ers. I think I need to go watch some Harry Potty films or something to relax.

I watched the NFB short film “Ryan”, I’ve started watching Cache, but I’m doing it in pieces before I go to bed, and I watched State of Play at the theatre last night.

Do you know Cache?

Oh! How could I forget it! I also saw Anvil: The Story of Anvil! Awesome documentary, very worth seeing.

Anvil!

Damn, it’s good to hear people enjoying that film – it’s great.

I thought “Cache” was excellent Ben, but it may be best served by watching in one shot – coming back to Trista’s comments about “Rashomon”, it’s a film that plays with your perceptions and your expectations.

For my part, I re-watched “[rec]” (it loses some of its effect on a second viewing, but I still think it’s a great use of the single camera viewpoint) and “WALL-E” (damn those closing credits are awesome…). New viewings included “Rachel Getting Married” (enjoyed it a great deal, but nowhere near the extent some people did – Rosemarie DeWitt was really, really good though), “Death Race 2000″ (yes, the original with Carradine – sometimes fun, sometimes sloppy, sometimes WTF, sometimes cool, but overall a bit of a mess) and “Belle Epoque” (not sure it necessarily deserved its 1993 Best Foreign Film Oscar, but very entertaining with an adorable Penelope Cruz).

Dracula 1931? That’s awesome Shannon! I haven’t seen it myself, but it’s on the list for sure. I do need to give some old horror some love.

Yep, I am familiar with Cache. I’ve had my eye on it for a while, but just no good time to watch it. Maybe some night I’ll do a double feature with Tell No One.

Why oh why have I not had time to go see Anvil!? I’m totally going to see it next week… Totally.

Bob, that’s a really interesting note about Rachel Getting Married. Liked it, but not as much as others did. Hmm…. I’m quite interested now. My only disagreement with your re-watches is that [rec] loses all its punch in the second viewing. Thought it was pretty solid the second time, but then that’s me.

Shannon, was that your first time seeing American Psycho? Was it not awesome? I mean, totally gruesome, but for what it was, a parody of the American 80s mindset and a critique of commercialism, I thought it was brilliant. Hip to Be Square anyone?

Haven’t seen State of Play, but very, very interested.

I loved Rachel Getting Married. Oh my goodness it made me cry though, a lot. A lot. I saw it the same day as Passchendaele… Moving on…

Awesome that you saw Death Race 2000 Bob! I haven’t seen that since I was a kid, memory is mostly other people finding it funny. Stallone vs Carradine can’t be more fun!

It was my first time seeing American Psycho Trista and I can totally see its genius but holy man, it was pretty shocking. Some of the non brutal moments were ones that I thought were the best though.

Great choices here! I saw one little movie, (There was a free preview of Mystery TV – I am powerless against the lure of decade-old Law and Order reruns *hides face in shame*) Anywho, I watched Ils. I didn’t like it very much. The concept of a home invasion is guaranteed to give me nightmares, but man-o-man I hated the ending!

Considering the amount of work I had gone through I saw Fast & Furious 4 (this one was used for relaxation purposes) and Milk. So, I don’t need to tell you which one of those is the best, do I?

As for Seven Samurai and Rashomon, although I saw both of these in my High school days, I still remember that I liked both films. In the case of Seven Samurai, it’s amazing how Kurosawa can turn a simple (and I mean a very simple) storyline into a powerhouse.

Trista DeVries April 20, 2009 at 11:53 pm

Ooohh. I LOVED Milk! It was a movie that very much made me remember that I love movies. In fact, it was one of the major reasons I decided to suck it up and start growing this blog.

It’s true. That was one of the things I admired the most about both Rashomon and Seven Samurai, was that they were definitely simple stories told complexly and elegantly.

Uhm. Stallone and Carradine? HOW can I NOT have seen this movie?!?!?!
