I Watched Stuff: My Bloody Valentine and Red Mist

in news

Over the weekend I watched actually a lot of stuff, but the two that I watched that were the most interesting were My Bloody Valentine (2009) and Red Mist.

My Bloody Valentine

Alright, well it’s not *great* or anything, but it’s certainly not as bad as everyone says. The story goes that a kid, the son of the mine’s owner, played by Jensen Ackles, forgets to bleed a line in the mine causing an explosion and the death of a number of miners. One survises and goes on a killing spree, ending up in a coma after an altercation with the police. He awakes from the coma on February 14th and goes on killing again, 22 people in total. Ackles’ character was one of the survisors of the second killing spree and we join him 10 years late as he returns to the town where it all began to sign the papers to sell the mine. Obviously people start dying or there wouldn’t be a movie.

I think that actually a lot more was made of the fact that this was a gimmicky 3D movie than was necessary. It was pretty standard big screen horror for theses days. Certainly I enjoyed it more than Ackles’ Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki’s turn in Friday the 13th. (I had to be fair to the both of them and see each of their crappy movies they made during the strike.) *SPOILERS AHEAD* Unfortunately, being a big fan of Supernatural was my biggest let down because the killer moves exactly like Jensen Ackles. I’m not sure why the producers would do something so stupid as to put the headliner in the action unless it was absolutely necessary. Both fans and non-fans would totally have got that right off. Like in Kiss the Girls when Carey Elwes’ voiceover during the credits told you exactly who the killer was, thus ruining the movie. Ah well. I still had fun and there was still a completely naked girl – muff and all – running around getting killed. Check it out if you’re a horror fan.

Red Mist

I’d heard a lot about this movie before I finally managed to find a copy in the store at my local video rental outlet. The story goes that a group of 6 med students are out partying one night. They’re drinking and doing drugs stolen from the hospital pharmacy. Unfortunately, they’ve been followed by a creepy kid with an unnecessary back story who likes dead girls and cutting on himself. He’s obessed with our lead girl, Katherine, and he’s equally obsessed with taking videos on his cel phone. After being ridiculed by the group he confesses that he has video of one of them getting the drugs. They immediately invite him to party with them but when the party goes wrong and he ends up in a coma they discover that sometime revenge can transcend the body. (Dun dun dun.)

I fully expected this movie to be almost total crap and it really wasn’t. I’m confused why it didn’t get a theatrical release, frankly, because it’s better than most of the crap that does (ahem, see above). It’s got a good story and it’s pretty spooky, plus there’s lots of gore and people getting what they deserve. I strongly recommend this flick to horror fans and fans of good movies in general.

I’ll rent this movie for that one reason alone.
