New Marvel Logos?

AICN had these logos from the Licensing Show and they hit the webs yesterday. I know that everyone is saying that these are the “logos” and art for the new movies they were announcing (although, not particularly “new”), but I disagree. These are all comic book fonts taken right from the covers of books you know and love. I don’t think this can necessarily be considered the new art for the films… it’s just the same art. The obvious art. The old art. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for tried and true, but I’m also all for making it good. So here’s what’s good: we have definitive, announced dates for these movies that have been in speculation for a long time. I could honestly care less about the Avengers (sorry, they just never did it for me), but I’m literally quivering that there is a date for Cap. I sincerely heart Captian America. I mean really, really heart Captian America. I do not, however, believe that I am capable of waiting until July 22, 2011 for it. Unless it’s really, really good. What do we think the chances of that are? I’m sure we all remember this:

I can’t wait to see what Kenneth Branagh does with Thor, but I have no attachment to the character whatsoever so I won’t be offended, or even notice, if they make too many changes. Cap, too, is someone who I’m just starting to get into – planning on borrowing a pal’s full Brubaker run soon.

So who do you see playing him then?

Well if it were ME casting this thing I would go with a total unknown. I think that’s the kind of treatment that the “greatest American superhero” deserves, but since that’s not really the Marvel way, I would have to go with either the rumored possible castings of Kevin McKidd or Patrick Wilson. I would err more on the side of Patrick Wilson, since I think that he more than proved in Watchmen that he is physically capable of selling the role (that guy can really move), but he also has the emotional depth and warmth that always came through from the pages of a Cap book for me. So…. yeah. My vote? Patrick Wilson. And it’s never gonna happen.

Off topic, yes, but I thoroughly enjoy the Brubaker sets. We had the luxury to meet the incredible Steve Epting in March, so that – clearly – completely made my life. I’m extremely partial to the events of Civil War and how those Civil War books that specifically encompass Cap were incredible for me. I strongly suggest the collected book “Civil War: Iron Man”, because while Tony Stark is a war profiteering d*ck, there is a mini-series set at the end of that book called “The Confession” that is, in my opinion, the best thing to come out of Marvel in a long, long time.

Right then, rant over. What say you? Who should play Cap?

Ya know, Patrick Wilson ain’t a bad idea at all! I

I enjoyed Civil War, though felt it ended with a whimper, not a bang – the miniseries at least, since the true closing event of the war was, of course, Cap getting capped! I would have preferred that to happen in the miniseries rather than his own book.

For some reason my browser refreshed there before I was done typing – was going to add…

I love Kevin McKidd and was fully in support of him playing Thor, when those rumours were flying. But I also heard a while back that Neal McDonough was expressing interest in the role, which I’d be interested to see. I’m working my way through the Band Of Brothers box set at the moment, and seeing him in the WW2 setting, I’m increasingly sold on him being able to carry the shield.

Interesting what you note about Civil War there Selfstyler. I don’t think that Civil War itself (the collected 7 issues) were meant to be that great. What they were meant to do was sell comics. What a lot of people don’t know is that unlike DC and their many Crises, Marvel spreads out the effect that these events have on each character in their universe across every book they can. That means that, in addition to the book itself, there are 13 or 14 collected editions that show how this effected each character on a personal level. For instance, Spider-Man revealing who he really is didn’t actually happen in Civil War, it happened in one of his own books. So I usually tell people to skip Civil War (read it at the end) and read all the peripheral books first. I recommend strongly the Iron Man book mentioned above, Amazing Spider-Man and Wolverine (especially the Wolverine book… it’s got the most incredible art). That way the story actually has impact instead of being a flimsy critique of the Patriot Act in which they actually come down on the side of Cap being wrong. Yeah, whatever there Quesada.

I’ve heard the McDonough rumor too, but I don’t like it. Can’t really express why, maybe because he plays a jerk in almost everything so I can’t see him being the good boy that Mamma Rogers raised. I have the Band of Brothers box set that my best friend loaned me three years ago and still haven’t got around to it. But now I’ll have to get on it… For my money though, it’s still Wilson….

PS: I hated they way they killed Cap. There. I said it. Although apparently in July they’re bringing him back… mistake, I say…
