Well, it would appear that it’s not true. Or at least, it’s one heck of a PR job. Variety is reporting that Stephen Sommers was never asked to leave the movie and that he, in fact, has final cut. So whether it’s true or not, let’s look at this situation for a moment, shall we?
Variety notes that, “The incident marks the latest example of studios having to combat false rumors just because film news sites and bloggers are eager to break news about a hot property.”
Really Variety? Really?!?! You really think that this happened because people are eager to break news about a hot property? I respectfully, wholeheartedly disagree.
This rumor spread because this was what people wanted. People saw the trailers and turned away because when you’re dealing with long-standing properties like G.I. Joe, people want to see what they got when they were kids – not crappy accelerator suits. They want to see the characters they love doing the things they remember and, so far as I can tell, the only things to remain sacred so far is that Scarlet has red hair and that Snake Eyes and Stormshadow are ninjas. Destro doesn’t even have a silver face for crying out loud. And anyone who thinks that SIENNA MILLER is the one and only person on this planet who can channel the Baroness is flat-out, unmistakably mentally defective – and you can quote me on that. I do not want realism in my GI Joe and neither does anyone else. We want to see Cobra get served, with Joe taking a minor beating, and listen to Cobra Commander hiss away about how he has no power and is surrounded by idiots. Why? Because he was. ACCELLERATOR SUITS?!?!?! How about just kick ass soldiers?!?!? Dood, even TRANSFORMERS has actual transforming robots and all GI Joe can promise me is that it’s going to be such a train wreck that the only way to possibly up the profits on it was the leak a rumor about a director being fired and a horrible screen test. But that’s not really what happened. I’m just making that up. Because when people really, really love what you’ve made and just can’t wait to see it, they make up rumors about how the director was fired because the movie is awful.
Did you hear that one about how they removed Chris Nolan from The Dark Knight because it screened poorly in Denver?
