While doing press for Public Enemies (a movie that has received such luke-warm reviews that I haven’t been able to bring myself to sit through it’s 2.5 hours and, during the filming of which, Johnny apparently stopped speaking to Michael Mann due to the chaotic way in which he shoots, but I digress…) Johnny indicated to Collider.com that he and Tim Burton are going to be making a movie of Dark Shadows.
Johnny said, “‘Dark Shadows’ is happening. Tim is working on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with ‘Alice’ and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year. It’s exciting, very exciting. It’s like a lifelong dream for me.”
Don’t know what Dark Shadows is? That’s okay. It’s a melodrama soap opera-style show that ran from 1966 to 1971. When it initially started it was just a creepy melodrama but as its run continued they introduced ghosts, zombies, vampires, witchcraft, time-travel and so many more wonderful things. It’s campy and fun and everyone who sees it loves it. In short, it’s perfect for Tim Burton… and I almost never say that. Johnny has wanted to do this project forever and, in fact, is actually listed on the Dark Shadows Wikipedia page as being a big fan. And you know if they put it on Wikipedia, it must be true. Regardless, there is hope yet and I’m looking very much forward to this movie, even if it will basically just be a carbon copy of every other movie Burton’s ever done.
