The Shinsedai Cinema Festival is gearing up for its inaugural year here in Toronto. Created by Chris Magee of J-Film Pow Wow and Jasper Sharp of Midnight Eye, the Shinsedai Cinema Festival is set to bring fresh, new and innovative Japanese cinema to Toronto for the first festival of its kind in the city.
Shinsedai, the Japanese word meaning ‘new generation’, the festival is set to show you the world of Japanese film beyond Kurosawa. Mixing shorts and features this is a sure to please festival filled with interesting and innovative works that is sure to have something for everyone. Naked of Defenses, a film about forging friendships in hard times won the Grand Prix at the 2008 Annual Pia Film Festival. Girl Sparks is a comedy about a girl who really doesn’t like the life she leads, but steps up to help her father when he needs it most, mixing the fantastical and the real with hilarity. Vortex & Others: 5 Short films by Yoshihiro Ito is a collection of films that are sometimes absurd, sometimes hilarious and occasionally a little disturbing this set of short films is really not to be missed. In fact, little of this wonderful festival is to be missed.Check out the full listing of films here and the schedule here.
In addition to a wonderful slate of films, a number of actors and directors will be in attendance for the festival as well, available for Q&As at the screenings.
The festival runs from August 21st to 23rd at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Tickets are available at Eyesore Cinema and Things Japanese and are $12.00 each screening, with tickets packages available. Tickets will also be available at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre on the weekend of the festival.
