You know what there’s been a significant lack of around here lately? Lists. And you know that this site was founded on? Lists. So I’m doing a shout out to all of you who read here regularly but haven’t sent me one. I know it’s hard. Do genre specific lists if you must, but definitely send me a list. You can even use the contact form, you don’t even have to open your email. And you don’t have to be a regular reader to send one. First time here? Got a list? Send it!
I’ll get on some lists over the next little while too, because this street goes both ways.
A word on comments. Previously I didn’t want comments on the blog because there are a number of issues with them, including spamming and other unpleasant items. As such, I decided no go. After looking into it a bit, it appears that Blogger (and the very smart people at Google) have implemented a few things to make that simpler and, as such, I have decided to allow comments on the posts going forward. That being said, Mikie had a comment he wanted to add….
Hey all. It’s been some time since my last post, it’s true. Family medical issues (boo) and a new position at work (yay) have prevented me from having a significant amount of free time. Needless to say that for my birthday this year, I ‘gave’ myself tickets to four movies at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) which subsequently re-invigorated my need to tell you all precisely what I think using the greatest of all Man’s creations, the Interweb.
There’s so much to discuss I don’t even know where to start. Over the next few days I’ll be posting some reviews and musings about some of the end of summer movies. I’ll also be posting some pix and stories from the Film Fest. Screw Hollywood Blvd! They had to close YONGE STREET. That’s practically like closing the city! And then Brad got attacked in his SUV. I have an idea. Maybe if you could have been bothered to stay with the rest of us pleebs and watch the movie with us a woman would not have had the opportunity to attack you with her baby. But whoa! I’m getting ahead of myself here.
For those of you who got my email and are just tuning in, stay awhile and check out some of the other posts. Feel free to email me your comments for posting. Unfortunately, I can’t just let everyone post comments because there’s a spam issue… or something… I don’t have time to monitor it…. sorry.
So that’s it for new folks! Send me your lists or your TIFF stories and off we go!
After coming up with this idea and talking to many friends about it, it was discovered that the idea of choosing 10 movies to watch was slightly more complex and daunting than I had originally envisioned. The first thing I had to do was to decide which movies actually counted as movies. So, I turned to Mirriam-Webster’s online dictionary for a little clarity.
Their definition of a ‘motion picture’ is the following:
1 : a series of pictures projected on a screen in rapid succession with objects shown in successive positions slightly changed so as to produce the optical effect of a continuous picture in which the objects move
2 : a representation (as of a story) by means of motion pictures
While their definition of a ‘movie’ is:
1 : Motion Picture
2 plural : a showing of a motion picture
3 plural : the motion-picture medium or industry
(Note to Mirriam-Webster: I do not claim that the definitions above are mine in any way, shape or form — I just like to blog. If there is an issue, please email me before speaking to your legal department. Thank you.)
So how, you’re asking yourself, does this apply to choosing my favorite movies? Excellent question. What this means for us is that, for the purposes of this exercise, a ‘movie’ for consideration is anything that had an original, theatrical release or that has ever been screened in a theatre either in digital or in 35mm. If you can find a date or a screening that you attended, it qualifies!
So to be clear, this does not include made for TV movies (sadly, including HBO), direct to video/dvd movies, and television mini-series. I know that this is currently making some of you sad, but take heart! There are literally thousands of other great movies out there!
