Can you hear that? That ‘boom’ there? That’s the sound of my head exploding. Apparently, Variety reported on January 8, 2007 that M. Night Shenanigan is has penned a deal with Nick Movies and MTV Films to write, produce and direct a live-action 3 film series based on the Saturday morning cartoon ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, probably the most innovative and best cartoon currently on the air. I hate to break it to him, but there’s no twist to ‘Avatar’. It’s just the story of a boy who can save the world. Also not to be confused with a deal that James Cameron just signed to do a sci-fi movie, his first since Titanic, about which I could not care less. As a matter of fact, M. Night Shenanigan aside (who should be stopped IMMEDIATELY), I think that directors who start directing before they’re 40 should have to stop at 40. Otherwise it appears that they lose their minds and start trying to do things like win Nobel Peace Prizes by highlighting their culture and executive producing really bad cartoon adaptations. No wait. Maybe that’s just Spielberg. But seriously, Cameron went all soft after Titanic and really, this ‘Avatar’ thing can’t be good.
Now if only Shenanigan would be content with destroying his own career, to the tune of a lucrative Disney contract, and leave my favorite cartoon alone, I could go back to pretending to be happy.
