Well, it seems the be the zeitgeist (no, not the movie) to post the top movies of 2008, however, I have seen abysmally little this year, especially since the Oscar bait has come out of the woodwork and as a result, I do not believe that it would be fair to post a ‘top 10′ list. What I can do, however, is post my 10 favorites from this year. Unfortunately I have not yet reviewed all these movies for the site, so I will instead have to refer you to either my esteemed colleagues in my sidebar or my buddy Google for info on each of them. 2008 was a weird year for movies, with a glut of crap coming out of the woodwork and forcing some of the smaller films that would have inevitably been overlooked into the spotlight.
My Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2008:
Red – A heartbreaking study in justice and human behavior. I loved this movie for its soul, but I loved it simply because it was a beautiful film.
Iron Man – Because it was extremely cool and because it was a great movie about a guy who just wanted to do some good in the world (with a lot of money, so he had really cool stuff).
The Dark Knight – Duh.
Midnight Meat Train – Technically speaking, this movie was not released in 2008 because it is stuck in studio hell right now with none of the 3 studios who got together to make it willing to put it out. It’s a great movie which I will review at some point. Bottom line: Is you can see it, do it.
Amal – I might take some flack for this one because the film does have limitations, but I can’t overlook it’s message and filmmaking achievement. See it. Don’t walk. Run.
The Class (Entre les Murs) – The Palme D’Or winner at Cannes, this is a startling look at what happens between the walls of the classroom and how it bleeds into life. It’s a stark reminder that the battles we face in school are no different that those we face in everyday life.
Penelope – A great fairy tale that, once I rented it, I watched it three times just because I liked it so much.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Despite a number of other similar comedies this summer (ie. Tropic Thunder) FSM came out on top because I can watch it again. The mark of a good comedy is when it’s funny more than once. This one is.
Young People Fucking – I really liked this movie because it’s just plain good. Again, it does have some limitations, but if you can overlook those (which I could), it’s a good time and a great Canadian showing.
Who is KK Downey? – Entirely too much to say about this little cult movie so I refer you to the review.
